Camping in France

Thank you for visiting the Sandpiper Website. Sandpiper celebrates the 30th year of organising self-drive holidays in Western France in 2006. All our family holidays in France are famed for the cuisine, beautiful scenery, and wine at ridiculously cheap prices. However, in order to get the nice beaches and the sunshine it is necessary to travel to the West Coast. You can choose from 7 camping holidays sites stretched over a selection of 3 areas, each having its own beauty and advantages.

Brittany has a rugged coastline and stunning views with lots of little fishing ports and harbours. It is, in many ways, very like Cornwall, with its rocky coves and small inlets. Safe and child friendly long white clean sandy beaches. Superb food and wine. The land of myths and legends. Towns steeped in history. Small coastal villages. Brittany has it all for everyone who wants to take holidays in France.

The Vendee region is probably the area most popular with the British holidaymaker. It is an ideal base for the perfect seaside holiday. Miles of glorious sandy beaches stretch as far as the eye can see. Just inland, rambling pine forests provide shade from the warm summer sun. The fashionable resorts of St Jean de Monts and Les Sables d’Olonne are renowned for their sandy beaches, bustling promenades and restaurants - ideal for self catering in France. As in Brittany, seafood is a speciality here and mussels are commercially cultivated along the coast.

This region is home to the famous Muscadet and Gros Plant wines. You can spend hours exploring the many vineyards and sampling the local produce at the ‘caves’ where good quality wines are sold at very reasonable prices. The Vendee boasts its own micro-climate and records the second highest number of sunshine hours in France. Water sports are very much part of the scene here.

Charente in the South West region of France has become an increasingly popular holiday destination over the past years. One of the reasons for this is that it enjoys a Mediterranean type climate without any of the crowds of the South of France. The site we offer, L’oree du bois is set in the centre of a huge pine forest. They are so confident of the weather that both the bar and restaurant are located outside with only a canopy to keep off the sunshine. With the reputed surfing beaches of the North-west coast of the Ile d’Oleron and the endless cycle routes which crisscross Ile de Re this area boasts something for everyone. The region is characterised by varying landscapes, alternating between pine forest and marshland, cliffs and sand dunes. Apart from the pleasures of the seaside, there’s plenty going on throughout the year in terms of entertainment as well as some interesting sightseeing which reveals some of the area’s military, religious and architectural heritage. Although the tourist trade has grown in recent years much care has been taken to preserve the areas character, based on the traditional fishing, oyster, wine and salt trades. Travel inland to explore the world famed Cognac distillery, while two hours further south takes you to the prestigious vineyards of Bordeaux.
