Spain Holidays

Spain is a very popular holiday destination for a number of countries including the UK & Germany. This is mainly due to its warm climate & location as a flight from the UK. The Kingdom of Spain is rich with culture & possesses some extraordinary examples of early architecture. The landscape of Spain mainly consists of mountainous regions which include the Sierra Nevada & the Pyrenees. This gives the country a beautiful rugged feel which is unmistakably Spain.

The Pyrenean Experience

Spain has few secrets left to share with the outside world, but the outstanding beauty of the Baztan valley is undoubtedly one of them. The mysterious mediaeval hamlets of the Spanish Pyrenees - with their immense white-washed spanish farmhouse and balconies dripping with pink geraniums - have escaped the notice of the Moors and Romans alike. And continue to elude allbut the most discerning tourist.

Leaving France for holidays in Spain, you can climb over the hidden mountain passes of the western Pyrenees. Stop and note the smugglers’ paths that veer sharply from the track and disappear off into woods of beech and sweet chestnuts and the waterfalls that tumble down to the road and move onwards carving an intricate series of river valleys into this secretive landscape.

This is perfect walking country for the perfect walking holiday in Spain.

Suddenly, your path turns out of the woods and into a soft belly of rolling green pastures. The foothills of the Pyrenees stretch upwards as the sunlight floods down. A farmer wearing a Basque beret herds sheep across the track and over a rickety wooden bridge to his farmhouse. A sheep dog barks, tomatoes droop heavily on the vine, the sky is blue. Stop for a moment and listen: sheep bells, cow bells, horse bells – the valley rings. A pair of falcons circle overhead. A man chops firewood with an axe and the air smellsof moist earth and leaves in the sunshine.

As you follow the river valley you will come across the pretty bucolic villages of the Baztan. Wander down their backstreets and explore the tiny artists’ ateliers and artisans’ workshops as they work their traditional crafts in wool, wood and leather. Drop in at the water mill in Amaiur and wash down your corn talo and cheese with a glass of local cider. Yet, do not be deceived by the apparent tranquillity of the area, tradition and superstition run deep. Throughout the year these villages erupt into colour and life – this is the place of music and dance, of witches and carnival masquerades, of holy shrines and pagan fiestas.

And if perhaps you are in need of a break from all this medieval landscape - a touch of sophistication perhaps - then there are a variety of breaks in Spain and France just an hour from the door. Firstly, there is the glamorous city of San Sebastian – arguably the most beautiful city in Spain – with its magnificent sandy bay, promenade and medieval streets peppered with tapas bars. An hour to the north is the international airport of Biarritz and the whole nostalgic French coast line, known for its traditional fishing villages, tiny sea food restaurants and the vast expanses of white sand beaches along the Côte Sauvage. An hour to the south is the historic city of Pamplona and the famous fiestas of San Fermin.

The Pyrenean Experience runs a series of open-house farmhouse walking holidays from our 18th century Baztan farmhouse in the Pyrenees. Our relaxed Spanish walking holidays give a select few guests the opportunity to explore the enigmatic Baztan culture, and offer a portfolio of walks uncharted by any guide book. Our walks step out from the farmhouse door onto smugglers tracks and stretches of the famous Saint James’s Way. (El Camino de Santiago). Our walking holidays in Spain can also be combined with Spanish language courses with professional Spanish teachers.

All our walks in the Pyrenees and carnivals are run house-party style by local guides, they offer unlimited food and wine throughout the week and charge no single supplements.

Italy

For many people, Italy conjures up images of hilltop farmhouses surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers. This scenery is of course, typically Tuscan, Tuscany being the most famous region in the country. It is glorious, but il bel paese has a lot more to offer those prepared to go off the beaten track a bit.

Italy is a mainly mountainous country made up of 20 regions and it pays to explore, no matter what your interest. Take skiing for example; the most famous resort is uber-cool Cortina in the Dolomites, favourite of well-heeled Italians and non Italians alike. But move away from the obvious and try the Sibillini mountains in the region of Le Marche, where you are also ideally placed for the beach and are surrounded by an amazing natural park and a landscape steeped in history.

As an alternative to Tuscany, try its gentler neighbour Umbria, whose beautiful Lake Trasimeno offers swimming, boating and fishing. The region is home to Assisi - home of St. Francis as well as Orvieto and its beautiful cathedral and Deruta, where you can buy wonderful ceramics.

Florence is on most people’s must-see list, but I’ll bet you’ve never heard of Lecce (pronounced Letchay). Known as ‘the Florence of the south,’ it’s in the Salento region in Puglia at the very heel of the ‘boot’. Its stunning white Baroque buildings are incredible, the town lively and bustling even in mid winter, and you are also minutes from the beach. Another reason why it pays to be a bit adventurous when thinking of Italy.

Agriturismo

Agriturismo holidays are very popular with Italians and non Italians alike. An agriturismo holiday in Italy gives you the chance to stay on a farm or smallholding either in the main farmhouse itself or in a converted outbuilding. Very often agriturismo accommodation is an apartment or a whole house and this has usually been done in rustic style with wood beams and terracotta floors. There is usually a swimming pool if that is what you are looking for, and many of these country properties have wonderful views. You may choose the self catering route although some agriturismi provide breakfast and evening meals. Landscape Property’s Italy vacation database has over 3000 different holiday accommodation providers covering the whole of the country, and among them you’ll find many agriturismo holidays to choose from. You may even decide to spend your Italy holidays in two or more different locations – an excellent way to discover the parts of the country you have never visited before, and the informality offered by booking an agriturismo holiday is ideally suited for this. Have a look at some of the fantastic Italian vacation accommodation we have on offer today. And remember, you book directly with the owner so you don’t pay any commission.

Bulgaria is a fantastic location as the country provides a strong culture & beautiful scenery. Since 1999 the country has been divided up into 28 provinces, each named after their provincial capitol. The people of Bulgaria have a variety of traditional festivals which you can attend throughout the year & the traditional music of Bulgaria is starting to resurface via folklore music contests which are held throughout Europe. Selections of traditional Bulgarian songs were in fact used on the Voyager I & II missions as part of a message to other civilizations.

Cyprus Holidays

Cyprus has been a popular holiday destination for British tourists for years, partly due to the fact that the United Kingdom still has colonies on this beautiful island. It is said that the Greek goddess, Aphrodite made Cyprus her home & this is why many travellers still come to pay her homage.

Cyprus has a great deal of culture to offer & is full of fantastic examples of historical architecture. The holiday villas in Cyprus are beautiful.

Portugal Holidays

Portugal is located in the North Atlantic Ocean & only borders with Spain. The country has a population of approximately 10million & its capital is Lisbon. Portugal’s capital is located near the East coast & in the Southern part of the country. This friendly country also harbours some of the most spectacular landscapes & is blessed with excellent weather throughout the year. The authentic seafood cuisine Portugal has to offer can only be described as mouth watering & is a must try when you visit. A popular holiday destination in Portugal includes the Algarve & Lisbon; this is partly due to the fantastic architecture & the selection of first class golf courses which are located there.
