Since the first introduction
of motor cars there has been a quest to find different
methods for carrying extra cargo. Developments
in this area have led to the introduction of the
light weight car
roof rack, otherwise known as board
racks. These types of load
carriers have been fine tuned to carry a range
of specialist items. Examples of some of these
travel
racks includes luggage
racks, surf
racks & ski racks, all of which have been
specifically designed to carry these items safely
to the required destination.
Early models of car roof racks used to be constructed
from light metal frames & could have certain
drawbacks such as scratching the vehicles paintwork.
This encouraged further development of the roof
rack & in turn this brought about the
introduction of soft racks. These types of car
roof racks have no components in contact with
the vehicle that are capable of causing damage.
These days there are a huge selection of suppliers
available for all kinds of vehicles including
cars, vans, 4x4’s many more. For example Glaziers
attach complex racking systems to the sides of
their vans so they can transport large sheets
of glass to their required destinations quickly
& safely.
The next development of the roof
racks system came in the form of the Thule
roof racks. These are enclosed units & have
been purposely designed this way for a number
of reasons. The first reason is for safety as
an enclosed unit leaves very little chance for
items to be wind swept from these travel racks.
The second is to assist with the aerodynamics
of the vehicle. The old roof rack systems could
impede the vehicles performances making it harder
to control. The Thule system works with the aerodynamics
of the vehicle & so provides less drag &
less resistance. This makes the vehicle far easier
to control, even with the high winds that can
come with motorway driving.
